Oxford and Abingdon bus service changes

  

effective from Sunday 6th June 2010 

Oxford area 

Service 4B (Oxford Bus Company) 

Rose Hill – City – Cumnor – Abingdon (evenings and Sundays) 

The existing supported hourly extension, from Cumnor to Abingdon will 

continue, with the frequency unchanged. Between Wootton and Abingdon 

diverted via Dalton Barracks and Shippon instead of Wootton Road and 

consequently re-numbered from 4B to 4. Click

Service 6 (Oxford Bus Company) 

City – Woodstock Road – Wolvercote (evenings and Sundays) 

These journeys will continue to be provided by the Oxford Bus Company from 

support. Click

Service 9 (Oxford Bus Company) 

City – Headington – Risinghurst (evenings and Sundays) 

The Oxford Bus Company has advised of their intention to provide an evening 

and Sunday service to Risinghurst to be introduced in autumn 2010. This will 

be on a wholly commercial basis without the need for financial support.

Service 10 (Stagecoach in Oxfordshire) 

City – Cowley – Wood Farm – Headington – J.R. Hospital 

The County Council will continue to financially support a half hourly frequency 

on this route on Sunday to Wednesday evenings ONLY (other nights are run 

commercially and are therefore not funded, neither are any N10 journeys), 

together with a couple of very early Sunday morning trips. There will be no 

change to the current timetable. Click

Service 12, 12B, 12C (Stagecoach in Oxfordshire) 

City – Cowley – Greater Leys 

This service has been operated on mainly commercial basis by Stagecoach 

since February 2010. The County Council will however continue to financially 

support a number of early morning and evening journeys although the 

following alterations will be made:- (note that there will be no change to the 

routeing of this service at this time). 

Service 12 

06.07 (Monday to Friday) Greater Leys to City is withdrawn due to low usage 

06.15 (Monday to Friday) City to Greater Leys (12B) is withdrawn. 

Certain journeys between 19.00 and 20.00 are altered in conjunction with 

changes to 12C below. 

Most buses will operate through onto route 16 changing route numbers at St 

Aldates (stop G4 towards Greater Leys and H2 from Greater Leys). 

Service 12 Sundays (and Public Holidays) 

A new hourly Sunday daytime service will be introduced to Greater Leys 

following requests. Buses will run every hour at 09.08 from Greater Leys 

(Grenoble Rod / Little Bury) until 18.08 and from the City (St Aldates stop G1) 

at 09.45 then hourly until 17.45. Evening buses will be provided (as now) on 

route 12C – see below

Service 12B (Unipart)

continue unchanged. 

Service 12C 

City – Iffley Road – Sandford-on-Thames – Kassam – Greater Leys – Cowley 

– Cowley Road – City (Circular) 

Continuation of existing route and times of this seven day per week supported 

service. Additional journey added from City (St Aldates) at 19.10 (daily), partly 

replacing 12 journeys (above).

Service 14, 14A (Stagecoach in Oxfordshire) 

Rail Station – City – Marston – J.R. Hospital 

This service has been operated on mainly commercial basis by Stagecoach 

since February 2010. The County Council will however continue to financially 

support a number of early morning journeys and approximately half the 

daytime frequency on Saturdays so as to maintain a half-hourly frequency. 

The following minor alterations will be made:- 

05.55 (14) (Monday to Friday) J.R Hospital to Rail Station will run at 06.10 

The Saturday early morning frequency before approximately 08.00 will be 

widened to hourly due to low usage at these times. 

There will be no change to the routeing of this service at this a time, nor to the 

service/frequency via Marston Village. Click

Service 14X (RH Transport) 

Old Marston (Bradlands) – Marston 

Replacement service on Wednesdays and Fridays provided by Oxfordshire 

County Council, route renumbered H1, and operated by Special Services 

Transport. Continues from Marston via Franklin Way to Headington Shops to 

meet requests made during consultation. This will operate as an unregistered 

free service. 

Services 16, 16A, 16B (Stagecoach in Oxfordshire) 

City – Donnington Bridge – Florence Park – Cowley – Minchery Farm 

This service has been operated on mainly commercial basis by Stagecoach 

since February 2010. The County Council will however continue to financially 

support a number of early morning and most of the evening journeys although 

the following alterations will be made:- 

Monday to Friday 05.35 (16) Minchery Farm – City and 0605 (16) City – 

Minchery Farm withdrawn due to low usage 

Most buses will operate through onto route 12 changing route numbers at St 

Aldates (Stop G4 from Minchery Farm and H2 towards Minchery Farm). 

Daytime buses will no longer serve Speedwell Street, Castle Street or Queen 

Street and will cease to set down and pick up at stop E1 in Castle Street. 

Evening (contracted) journeys will operate via St Aldates (set down) out of 

service to High Street, turning at the Plain to return to St Aldates (pick up stop 

H2). Click

Services 17, 17A, 17C (Stagecoach in Oxfordshire) 

17 City – Jericho – Summertown – Cutteslowe (Monday to Saturday daytime) 

17A Rail Station – City – Walton Street – Marston Ferry – JR Hospital (eves) 

17C Rail Station – City – Walton Street – Marston Village – JR Hospital 

(Sunday daytime). 

The existing hourly frequency and pattern of service will continue. Route in 

City Centre altered as follows (17 only, no change to 17A or 17C). 

a) From Worcester Street to operate via New Road to Castle Street (set 

down M2); pick up at New Road (E5) as now. No longer serves Park 

End Street or Oxpens Road. 

b) After Magdalen Street, will operate via Beaumont Street to Walton 

Street rather than St Giles and Little Clarendon Street (17A, 17C 

already operate via Beaumont Street both ways).

Berinsfield – Baldons – Kings Copse – Cowley Centre – City or Abingdon 

Change of contractor from Heyfordian Travel or Grayline to Stagecoach in 

Oxfordshire and route renumbered 89 

New route 89 will operate Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 

Nuneham Courtenay (Baldon Lane) and Cowley Centre via The Baldons and 

Kings Copse. Service from Berinsfield to Cowley Centre already provided by 

existing route 116. 

Cowley – City section of 49 withdrawn but through fares offered by 

Stagecoach to City centre by changing at Cowley to route 1. 

Service 49A withdrawn but replaced by equivalent journey on 89 to Cowley.

Service 59 (Stagecoach in Oxfordshire) 

Diversion of journeys via Langford Lane (Oxford Airport) 

These will continue with no change to the present times. 

Services 85, 86, 87 

Services revised and routes renumbered 85, 86, and 20 (see below). 

Change of contractor from Heyfordian Travel to Stagecoach in Oxfordshire. 

Service 85 

Iffley (Boundary Brook Rd) – Iffley Village – Cowley Centre 

Retained as one shopping journey each way but will run on three days 

(Monday, Wednesday and Friday) instead of two. In Iffley Village will serve 

Church Way, to turn at the junction with Mill Way, Otherwise no change to 

route. Note:- this will restore a service to the centre of Iffley Village which has 

not been served for some years due to parking issues in Mill Way.

Service 86 

Lye Valley – Wood Farm – Horspath Road – Cowley Centre 

Retained as one shopping journey each way but will run on five days per 

week (Monday to Friday) instead of two. No actual change to route. Route in 

Lye Valley to be Lye Valley, Coverley Road, Bulan Road, Hollow Way (return 

Bulan Road, Coverley Road, Glebelands, Lye Valley).

Service 87 

Rose Hill – Asquith Road – Cowley Centre – Oxford Business Park – Unipart 

New hourly service (Monday to Saturday) from Rose Hill to Cowley Centre 

and renumbered 20, with journeys on Saturdays to Cowley (Tesco Store) and 

on Monday to Friday peak hours to Unipart (replacing 12B). 

Route on Rose Hill Estate via Ashurst Way to the Oval, then via Lenthall 

Road, Mortimer Road, Nowell Road, Wymbush Road, Cottesmore Road and 

Asquith Road. Part of the existing 87 route via Spencer Crescent, Rowney 

Place and Courtland Road is no longer served.

Service 206

Service 218 

Woodstock – Bladon – Cassington – Wytham – Five Mile Drive – Oxford City 

Change of contractor from RH Buses or Grayline to Heyfordian Travel 

Section from Woodstock – Bladon (Heath Lane) – Cassington withdrawn due 

to low usage. 

Villages have alternative services to/from Oxford although this may mean a 

change of buses. 

Service will run Wytham – Five Mile Drive – Oxford and is increased from four 

to six days per week (1 journey each way). Route extended in City Centre 

Monday to Friday from Magdalen Street to Westgate Centre (Castle Street).

Change of contractor from RH Buses to Stagecoach in Oxfordshire 

This service will continue with no change to route or timetable, other than 

change of contractor. 

Abingdon area 

Service 4B (Oxford Bus Company) 

Rose Hill – City – Cumnor – Abingdon (evenings and Sundays) 

The existing hourly extension from Cumnor to Abingdon will continue, with the 

frequency unchanged. Between Wootton and Abingdon diverted via Dalton 

Barracks and Shippon instead of Wootton Road and consequently renumbered 

from 4B to 4. 

Note: The last evening journey at 23.28 from New Road (County Hall) (Mon- 

Sat) is a commercially operated trip by Oxford Bus and will continue to 

operate via the existing route (includes diversion via Elms Rise, but already 

serves Shippon). Click

Service 40, 41, 42 

Abingdon Town Services 

Change of contractor from Whites Coaches to Heyfordian Travel 

Existing times and routes continue unchanged. Additional Saturday afternoon 

journeys introduced on routes 40, 41 and 42, until 17.45 running at the same 

times as Mondays to Fridays.

Service 43 

Eaton – Longworth – Gozzards Ford – Abingdon 

Change of contractor from Grayline to Whites Coaches 

Existing Thursday journey continues broadly unchanged. It will divert between 

Wootton and Abingdon via Dalton Barracks and Shippon serving Fairacres 

and the Hospital. Continues from Abingdon Stratton Way to the Leisure 

Centre in Hadland Road. The Monday only journey between Gozzards Ford 

and Abingdon is withdrawn. Click

Service 44 

Abingdon – Sunningwell – (North Hinksey) – Oxford 

Change of contractor from Grayline to Heyfordian Travel 

Various alterations to times including new journey at 09.30 from Boars Hill into 

Abingdon (Monday to Saturday). Broadly the same level of service as now 

(including peak hours and Saturdays). Click

Service 46 

Drayton St Leonard – Long Wittenham – Appleford – Abingdon 

Replaced by service 97(Whites Coaches) 

Will operate Drayton St Leonard – Berinsfield – Long Wittenham – Didcot – 

Appleford – Abingdon. Drayton has a Friday service (as now) whilst service 

over Didcot – Abingdon section increased from two days per week to six (two 

round trips per day). 

Service 48 

Jericho – Oxford City – Cowley Centre – Abingdon (Wed only) 

Service withdrawn 

Alternative facility provided by service 17 to Castle Street (Westgate Centre 

stop M2) and then service 5 from adjacent stop M1 to Cowley Centre. 

Interchange on return at New Road, stops E6 (service 5) and E5 (service 17) 

(Monday to Saturday). 

Services 49, 49A

Faringdon Town Services 

The Tuesday journeys to/from Lechlade from Faringdon via Buscot (service 

63) are withdrawn due to low usage. 

The Faringdon Town bus (service 61) (comprising four round trips per day) 

will consequently run to the same times every day, Monday to Friday.

Service 218 

Woodstock – Bladon – Cassington – Wytham – Five Mile Drive – Oxford City 

Change of contractor from RH Buses or Grayline to Heyfordian Travel 

Section from Woodstock – Bladon (Heath Lane) – Cassington withdrawn due 

to low usage. 

Villages have alternative services to/from Oxford although this may mean a 

change of buses. 

Service 218 runs between Wytham – Five Mile Drive – Oxford and is 

increased from four to six days per week (1 journey each way). Route 

extended in City Centre Monday to Friday from Magdalen Street to Westgate 

Centre (Castle Street) (already runs through on Saturdays).
