TOMORROW IS A LONG TIME!

By: A review by Jolanta Ryba

Piotr Krupa in Oxford

We could feel a sensitive touch of art from the music and singing performed by Piotr Krupa, at his Oxford Valentine’s Day concert, held by the Oxford Polish Association at ‘The Mill’ Cowley Road.

What caused the audience to listen so intently? Both men and women in the audience were seduced by the beauty of Piotr Krupa songs. Many of the lyrics were based on the works of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. His interpretation of well-known songs is masterful

This season’s highlights include the must-see, acclaimed revival of Abigail’s Party direct from the West End and following his triumphant performance as Othello, Lenny Henry stars in Fences before it heads to London.

The season also includes the return of popular companies such as English Touring Theatre with The Misanthrope, adapted from Molière by Roger McGough, The Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough bring Alan Ayckbourn’s latest play Surprises and Theatre Alibi return with a new version of Dickens’ The Old Curiosity Shop. Cheek By Jowl’s French ensemble also make a welcome return to the Playhouse following the success of Andromaque, to perform another French classic Ubu Roi.

There’s plenty on offer for families at Easter time, with David Wood’s delightful stage adaptation of Eric Hill’s books in Spot’s Birthday Party for ages 2 to 6. For everyone 7 and over, balletLORENT return to the Playhouse with a new adaptation of the classic Grimm fairy-tale, Rapunzel, told through stunning dance theatre.

As well as the very best drama, this season also offers dance from Richard Alston Dance Company and Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company, comedy from Jeremy Hardy and Mock the Week’s Andy Parsons and music from National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Plus don’t miss our Fridays at 5pm events with speakers including Ron Moody, Richard Alston and Michaela Strachan.

The season would not be complete without an offering of innovative productions from the popular Playhouse Plays Out programme. This spring, you can experience a unique life drawing performance in Still Life at Modern Art Oxford or reflect on stories of home when you travel in an intimate show at Oxford Youth Hostel Association called My Heart is Hitchhiking Down Peachtree Street.
