Racine’s Andromache at the Oxford Playhouse

by the Cheek By Jowl Company.

A review by Julia Gasper 12 March 2009

Saturday afternoon was rather warm, for the time of year, and the hottest place in Oxford was certainly the Playhouse, where the Cheek By Jowl company put on their sizzling production of Racine’s play Andromache. The story is about love, hate and desire for power, all converging in one intense, uncontrollable blaze of passion.

 Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred

Wireless

Voice Recognition Software.

Nicholas Newman 12 March 2009

It used to be said that talking to oneself was the first sign of madness. Today, it is no longer the case; because of the arrival of the latest version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred Wireless (DNS10). This voice to text technology has evolved a long way since it was demonstrated in the first series of Star Trek in 1968.

 Who is it for?

DNS10 is designed for professional writers, researchers, academics, journalists and even businessmen, such as estate agents or legal professionals. In fact, in any document intensive environment, DNS10 should prove a very useful tool in improving your productivity in dealing with the paper work. Even students will find it a valuable product for writing essays and dissertations. Its makers claim using voice recognition software can result in text being produced at three times the rate most people can type.

Oxford Theatre Review

Euripides’ HIPPOLYTUS
by Temple Theatre Company.

A review by Julia Gasper 12 March 2009

There are many good reasons for seeing Euripides’ tragedy , and one them is the line that jumps out at us when the enraged Hippolytus hears he is exiled by his father, King Theseus, “Power corrupts! Absolute power corrupts absolutely!” Did Euripides really write that two and half thousand years ago? Yes, he did, or words to that effect: “Kingship corrupts all who have held it,” is another version. These classical blokes noticed a thing or two, didn’t they? Somebody should tell Robert Mugabe.
